RENOVATORS and home handymen will soon be spoilt for choice with Masters and a second Bunnings store set to be built in Mandurah.
A spokesperson for Masters has confirmed their new store at the Education Drive site is scheduled for opening in April 2015.
In another coup for the region, Bunnings has made an application to build their second store on a development site in Halls Head.
The outcome of the Bunnings application looks set to be made by Mandurah councillors who are tonight recommended to include a bulky goods development within the Peelwood Parade precinct plan.
However, no final decision on the development would be made before the proposal is advertised to residents.
Under the plan, Bunnings would build their second Mandurah store behind the current Halls Head Centro shopping centre.
A modified road network surrounding the site would provide access from Old Coast Road and parking at the front of the store.
The proposed plan would see a roundabout put in place several hundreds metres before the current Old Coast Road/Mandurah Road intersection that would divert traffic through to the Halls Head shopping precinct.
That road would subsequently join with Peelwood Parade.
The changes to the zoning plan would see the proposed Bunnings site go onto the site instead of the formerly proposed residential land.
According to a report given to city councillors, the change is a better outcome for the city with the formerly proposed residential sites subject to visual and noise impacts with the area sharing a boundary with the rear of the shopping centre.
This new proposal would see that boundary shared by Bunnings.
Residential lots are still proposed on the Hungerford Avenue site with a road to be built, separating the houses from the shopping area.
As part of the Precinct Plan approval, to be considered by councillors at tonight’s meeting, a proposed stage two development of the Halls Head Centro shopping centre would also go ahead, allowing more retail space.
A decision on advertising the plan is set to be made at tonight’s City council meeting.
In related news, an earlier Lakelands development proposal also has Bunnings interest on record.
Whether or not the business is looking to build their third store is yet to be confirmed.
That Lakelands plan is still in its early stages with the City of Mandurah waiting on Main Roads comment regarding the Mandurah Road's site access.
