A SOD-turning ceremony at Mandurah Transit Station this morning marked the start of construction for an affordable housing project and a pedestrian bridge which will provide improved connectivity in the area.
More than $5million has been allocated to the project by the Federal Government through the Building Better Regional Cities fund to build the bridge over Mandurah Road and the railway line.
The total cost of the project will be about $6.4million with the City of Mandurah and Landcorp contributing the remaining funds.
The bridge will connect two future communities on the east and west sides of the train station, as well as providing easy access to education facilities, health, future shopping areas and the station itself.
The bridge is also tipped to boost safety for Greenfields residents walking to and from the train station.
With construction due to start in the next few months, the bridge will allow the affordable housing project at Central park to kick off on the eastern side of Mandurah Road.
Central Park will include single housing, townhouses, apartments and mixed use/residential and commercial office accommodation.
In an effort to boost affordable housing Access Housing will build 50 housing units in the area by 2016.
Sixteen of these units are already under construction on Allnutt Street.
Mayor Marina Vergone said the affordable housing component would go a long way towards addressing the needs of local residents and those looking to move to the area.
“It’s great to see this partnership between government, the private sector, the City and the community will provide affordable housing options in Mandurah,” she said.
“It is a huge positive outcome for the City and we are very excited to see this come to fruition.”
